um...

Brain fried. Updating to update.

Spent Saturday of the weekend watching the snow fall, as we sat by the fire enjoying movies. I had delusions of accomplishing more, but other than sleeping in and walking the dog, that was it. And I made brunch of turkey bacon and pancakes. We watched in reverse order Gran Torino, Harold and Kumar Escape Guantanamo Bay, City of Ember, and I can't remember what else at the moment.

Slept in very late on Sunday. Alan even came up to check on me and I was snoozing as he was chatting to me. When I finally did wake up I was gifted with a visit from Rob and Wen who brought me a pink poinsetta wrapped in pink foil! squee! Then Alan and I set to putting up the tree and getting a start on decking the halls. The tree is mostly decorated, and we put up the garland over the door and lights in the windows and ran out of steam. Really I walked the dog while Alan napped and then we all boogied over to Rob and Wen's for a chicken pot pie dinner of extreme yumminess.

Yesterday was a day at home sick sleeping for the most part. I tried to do some embroidery last night, but we watched Alice which required too much visual attention to also try to accomplish much on the frame.

So there you go. I've got a fresh Rx for antibiotics, which means that hopefully any bugs in my system will be gone by the time for our flight on Thursday morning up to Plymouth. But I can't wait for the big reveal of the Plimoth Jacket. One more question though, what do I wear?

I do not wish that this too, too solid flesh would melt...

Shapely Prose has a post about fat visibility in YA fiction with a request for people to post commentary on any YA (young adult) fiction where fat is portrayed positively, or even in a neutral non plot-point manner.

Cruel intentions... )

OK, this was a little creepy

I go out to my car to drive Brandon to school this morning and find something very odd on my car. There is a business card for a local healthcare system company ... on it from someone I don't know with a hand written note saying "Dinner sometime - if available" with a smiley face.

My first reaction was that it was one of those advertisements that are getting more and more clever everyday...(personal looking letters that are actually an invitation to a new church around the corner or a realtor in the area trying to sell your house).

So I look around....no one else has them on their cars.

My next assumption was a joke...still possible, but far fetched.

Then I started thinking about it...and it creeps me out a bit for the following reason:
1) I live in a townhome at the end of the street that U shaped around. Every single person on my block is married with kids, older couples, or single women.
2) This person (if it wasn't a mistake) knows which car is mine and since I park RIGHT in front of my townhome, knows at least vaguely which one is mine.
3) Card had been then for at least a day and Saturday it snowed.

I am hoping it was just a weak attempt by a desperate man categorized as a 10 percenter...

Never the less, it definately gave me an ick vibe. I kept the card...if I become a lifetime movie, they will refer to that as evidence. :-)

Praise of a different sort

Although it's not a snark; I'm new here, but have to say, I love it! As an SCA cartoonist I would love to occassionally lift some of these snarks for material (with approval from original posters) or if any of you have ideas you would like to share with me that are short, to the point, and applicable SCA wide(no individual or branch names or caricatures sorry)you could send them directly to me.

Song Pimpage!

It's been a long time since I've done some song pimpage so here's two for one!

1) "Damn Boy (What's Wrong With You)," by Taylor Hollings.
- Sounds a bit like early Rolling Stones.

2) "Down in Mexico," by the Coasters
- This song was used in Death Proof. It is made of the awesome.

The times you saw only one set of footprints in the dust?

Aaaaaaaahahahahaha. We cleaned this weekend.

As all of you who read my diary regularly know, I am not exactly Betty Homemaker. I do own a pretty good collection of hostess aprons (the little half aprons made of gauzy fabrics and lace, not aprons made of squishy delicious chemical cake), but they are reserved for looking at, and occasionally dressing friends up in with '50s dresses for humourous photographs with martinis.

Nope, I am not the housekeeper in the family.

But, the apartment was starting to look seriously like a candidate for Clean House, so it was time to get things under a semblance of control.

Those were the times I had to step outside for some fresh air, my son. )

Being a post hoor

<---- I could watch this icon all day....*sigh*

Not quite Etsy

I just "upcycled," one of my really awful old garb skirts. It was made from cotton that had a nice intricate gold pattern on it. It was definitely not something I could give away or sell. Now my old skirt is two lovely pillowcases. They'll go nice with my new slat bed. :D

I hear jingle bells in the far distance

Y-A-W-N.

One night of graveyard shift is worse than a week because I decide to just tough it out rather than really shifting my sleep schedule. This means I'm just now answering my Friday 'day' queries/messages (Seriously? 60+ business emails accumulate in a few hours of sleep? Seriously?!)

So no Christmas tree tonight acquisition tonight; it would be a chore, not fun. But I feel the Christmas spirit coming on despite my dreams of December sloth getting munched by another trip to the launch site. In fact, I'm thinking I should start my holiday shopping - one of our practices is to fund charities in honor of our friends rather than filling their shelves with a small, kitschy token of our love. (Though, sometimes, squirrel or skull shaped tokens just follow me home for distribution.)

One of my favorites is Heifer, International, and I found a link today in the blogsphere where Patrick Rothfuss of Worldbuilders will match 50% of any Heifer donation. Just a thought and a report to amp up the signal/noise ratio.

Looking forward to it getting properly cold and (maybe?) snowy.
Now, where did I put the hot buttered rum recipe?

*squee*-ness

Guess who's at work on a Friday?

(Well, aside from everyone working a full-time job.)

I need to work a full week this week, as I'm going to be off next Thursday, looking at the finished Plimoth Jacket (capitalization ftw) with [info]pinkleader and [info]cathgrace (and many others). I'm boggling with excitement. The Thistle Threads blog has been teasing all week with tiny peeks, and one entry where they had a picture of the petticoat fabric, the jacket, and the lace all together absolutely took my breath away. I swear, my heart literally skipped a beat.

As in "ba-dum, ba-dum, *frozen*-DUM".

*flaps hands in helpless excitement*

Costco deals

I think it was [info]chargirlgenius who was looking for sewing machines on the cheap. Costco has a Brother Sewing Machine computerized, 77 stitch functions, automated buttonhole for $120 (includes shipping) Not sure of the reviews of this machine, but seems like a good deal on the surface. Too bad I already have two working sewing machines I rarely use.

There is a big part of me that is tempted by the significantly cheaper price on the Wii, considering it was $3-400 when it first came out, right? That could be fun in the basement, and would likely freak the dog out.

[info]theblueleader , are you still contemplating/researching GPS units? Costco has the Garmin nuvi 265T with 3.5" screen for $129 and the 755T with 4.3" screen for $199.

I also kinda wonder how this keyboard stacks up in comfort comparison to the one I have at work that it a decade old MS Wave keyboard. Of course work should pay, not me. And I've always wanted a Roomba, mainly because I hate vacuuming and never do it often enough. But then always wonder about the multiple levels of the house. Would we need 4?

Okay, enough virtual retail therapy. My head/face hurts from having three fillings this morning, and I just wanna go home and lie down.

[info]attack_laurel

Yuck.

Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes; I feel very loved.

Unfortunately, I got food poisoning last night, or had a severe allergic reaction to something I ate, and had a horrible night. I'm feeling a bit better this morning, but I feel somewhat weak and drained (throwing up in the nastiest way possible at 3am will do that to you).

So I'm home. And propped on the sofa with ginger ale (the real stuff) and pillows.

Blah. At least I'll get some embroidery done between naps. And for some reason, I felt the need to do laundry, even though I don't have the energy to put any of it away. So, Bob, when you get home my love, there'll be a pile of laundry on the bed. Just FYI.

Lily Dress documentation

I finally have SOMETHING up about the 15th century Tournament of Lily gown, but honestly the documentation in it's entirety is better viewed here, so I figured I would cross post.

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday Wishes to [info]attack_laurel

Sorry I couldn't go dancing on Friday, but we will soon.

[info]theodorad

Swimming in moonlight

Roland's been teaching me to play Dragon Age (quest game, playstation). It's strangely companionable for the uninvolved player to look up from their book/chore/computer, glance at the ongoing action on the TV screen and comment So, honestly, what is the difference between Venomous Spider and Big Venomous Spider?

These computer generated characters live a roller coaster life - rest and 'stamina/life/magic' goes up until their cruel master (player) throws them into the fray depleting their energy to nearly nothing. I always thought this must be hard on the little computer generated people until I realized that I live my life in exactly this pulse mode, getting just enough rest to survive the next encounter.

I could seriously use a very long vacation, but that's not likely to happen with a launch campaign underway, straddled right across the complications of the holidays. I don't even want to write a Christmas letter because it will say Yes, Theo is *STILL* working on that same thing.

Last night, I turned off the laptop, turned off the playstation, the TV, the music and every light in the house. The full moon poured through the skylights, the hot tub was a pool of luminescence. I must have floated in silence for at half an hour just watching the shadows flirt with the light.

It was wonderously bone dissolving and peaceful, at least until a little Hobbes paw reached over the edge of the tub and batted me smack on the head. I tell myself the cat was making sure I didn't fall asleep and drown in Roland's absence.

One year eviler

Happy Birthday [info]attack_laurel! I'm sure she has a Dorien Grey like portrait hidden at the farm, cause she sure doesn't look forty. And somehow it's fitting that we have a full moon in the sky tonight.

"Let us talk", the attack_laurel said, "of... me".

Let's do a bit of catch-up on my life (with pictures!).

I know, you're all waiting with bated (or baited, but then you should probably brush your teeth) breath to read my rambling update that has no actual coherence apart from being in vaguely chronological order. But it's my birthday tomorrow, so I'm feeling self-indulgent.

Like that's anything new. My picture is in the dictionary next to Self-Absorbed. My name is also there:

Laura loahw-raaah (noun); Someone who is utterly convinced that everyone around them is
fascinated by all aspects of their life and inner thoughts. See also: Egotist

See?

(Possibly unrelated note: I clean up at Balderdash.)

So let's start with Halloween, all these many entries ago. I had Bob take pictures of my outfit, since it had a couple of cool vintage bits. I found this great 1920s comb for very cheap (they're usually a bit pricey, so as much as I've wanted one, I hadn't put out the cash) because it was a bit broken (but easily mended by someone not collecting for investment value): shoes and ships and sealing wax, cabbages and... pictures! (also a guest appearance by oysters) )
